🔬 Science Communication Workshops

Practical, hands-on sessions that help researchers communicate their work with clarity, confidence, and impact — beyond the journal.
flagship offering

✂️  the art of scientific subtraction

The hardest part of communication isn't what you say - it's what you cut.

This 2-hour workshop challenges scientists, researchers, and teams to do the harder work: stripping away the noise to find the signal. Participants leave with a clearer voice, a sharper message, and a hand-crafted research zine made with CSA's own zine kits — designed in collaboration with Calgary artist Nicole Gruszecki.

Ideal for graduate students, research teams, and organizations looking to communicate their work with more clarity and confidence.

What you'll walk away with:
  • A repeatable framework for audience-focused communication
  • Practical tools for jargon removal without dumbing things down
  • Your own one-page research zine — built in the room

Duration: 2 hours Who it's for: Scientists, researchers, graduate students, corporate and organizational teams
Cost:$35/person · Group discounts available for 8+

This workshop offered a fresh perspective for our student community on research communication, encouraging us to think about how to convey our projects in a simpler and more effective way. Beyond communication, they provided art supplies and zine-making kits designed by Nicole herself ( we are so lucky!).

It was a wonderful experience that allowed our imagination to flow and helped us develop our creativity. This workshop was a meaningful reminder that scientific communication can also be creative, accessible, and fun!

Viraj and Nicole did an amazing job supporting and empowering us throughout the activity, including in creating our own zines. We learned so much from them, and we highly recommend this workshop.

🎤 3mt (3 minute thesis) preparation

WORKSHOP · SMALL GROUP OR 1-ON-1
Three minutes. One slide. Your whole research story.
The Three-Minute Thesis is a performance — and most researchers prepare for it like it's a lecture. This workshop uses the principles of Scientific Subtraction and the ABT (And-But-Therefore) narrative framework to help you build a talk that's genuinely compelling, not just technically accurate.
Sessions are flexible and iterative. You'll get structured feedback, unlimited rounds of revision, and honest critique until your three minutes actually land.
What you'll work on:
  • Distilling your research into a clear, audience-first narrative
  • ABT structure: building tension and resolution into your talk
  • Delivery, pacing, and what competition judges actually respond to
Duration: Flexible — sessions run until you're ready Who it's for: Graduate students and researchers preparing for 3MT or similar competitions Cost: $40/person · Group rates available
